Turtle Beach Ear Force X41

Because we love the headphones around here, we've got this shiny review of Turtle Beach's latest wireless offering. I know what I think when I hear "Turtle Beach," but maybe SirPoonga can change my opinion... Here's his review.

I live in an apartment and can't have loud noises at night. I bought a used Tritton AX360 set, and while that is a very nice headset with very good sound, it is wired. In my new living quarters, I sit eight feet from my TV. The AX360 has a long enough cord, but it is rather annoying to be tripping over the cord or picking it up all the time. I like having surround sound in the games I play, so I was intrigued by the Turtle Beach X41s and decided to give them a shot.

I mostly play military shooters, Forza and sports games. In racing I want to hear what side of me another driver is on. In military shooters I want to hear what direction shots are coming from. The AX360 did a decent job at this by utilizing several speakers in each ear cup. While the true surround sound effect isn't there, I can tell which speaker sounds come out of. The X41 took a different approach to surround sound. It only has one speaker in each ear cup – that's right, it is a stereo headset. However, it uses Dolby surround sound processing to create a virtual surround effect. My first reaction to that was one of skepticism, but after reading some user reviews on the internet I decided to give them a try.

The X41 has many excellent features, such as Dolby 7.1, Pro Logix IIx decoding and chat boost to increase chat volume when game sound gets louder. For wireless technology it uses 2.4ghz RF, which does not require line of sight to the base unit. For Xbox chat, the headset plugs into the Xbox 360 controller. I prefer this as it means less battery power needed from the headset. The base unit has digital optical pass through, auxiliary input, wired headset port that outputs surround sound, and is powered using a USB cable. Since the base unit is powered using USB, this makes a great set of headphones for LAN parties or traveling.

The surround sound effect is done very well. To test it, I used three games – Forza 3, and Operation Flashpoint, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With Forza 3 there is so much engine noise from the car, hearing other drivers is difficult. When the other drivers are close enough you can tell which side they are on, and I could easily tell where the waterfall on the Fujimi Kaido track was as I drove by it.

I think Operation Flashpoint was a better test. The game has many sound effects, from armored vehicles shooting their guns to mortars in the distance. I chose a level in which the squad starts next to an armored vehicle shooting its machine gun at enemies. It stays there until you clear out the rocket teams ahead. I slowly turned around at the start and could tell the direction the vehicle was in. As I did the mission, I tested if I could still hear the direction of the vehicle. The sense distance isn't as good as my home theater system, but the direction of sound is excellent.

Modern Warfare 2 also sounded great on these headphones. Like Operation Flashpoint, MW2 has excellent surround encoding so you can tell which direction effects are coming from. In multiplayer this means you can hear someone's footstep around a corner and be ready.

The sound quality is great. I would give the AX360 headset the upper hand here but not by much. The only issue I have with sound quality from the X41 is the highs sound harsh. With the bass boost on there is good depth on the low end. Sound effects are clear and music is clean. Voices from chat are clear but a little lower in pitch than the Microsoft headset. Others have told me that my voice is clear but lower in pitch.

The build quality is excellent. The headset feels sturdy, no flimsy parts anywhere. There is plenty of padding on the headband and ear cups, and the ear cups are big enough for my ears to fit completely in. Considering it uses two AAA batteries the battery life is decent. One hardware issue is the microphone jack on the headset is located at the bottom of the left ear cup, and it is easy to accidently pull the cord out.

When the battery becomes too low voice chat pops and hisses. When the batteries completely drain the headset will give a large screech. After the batteries that came with the headset died I tried my rechargeable batteries. With those batteries voice chat had some hisses and pops all the time.

One claim Turtle Beach makes is the X41 doesn't have background hiss like the X4. This is true when the chat cable is not plugged in. However, when the chat cable is plugged into the Xbox controller it introduces a hiss, though you can't really hear the hiss while playing a game as the game sounds drown it out.

Overall I am pleased with the Ear Force X41 headset. The sound quality is excellent, the virtual surround effect works, the build quality is good and the feature list is ideal. I highly recommend the headset to anyone who wants wireless surround sound without bothering others.

One nice feature is that you can switch to watching tv with them by using your tv remote control. Is the X41 worth the extra cost vs the X31?

Had MANY problems with the RF tech and batteries (Score: 1)

This may not apply, since I had the x31s, but they use the same RF tech and battery setup. I had TERRIBLE problems with the RF getting interference with every other 2.4Ghz wireless product (which is almost all wireless gadgets) in my my house. I even went so far as to buy a Wireless N router so I could switch my XBOX over to the 5Ghz wavelength to see if that fixed my prob. Nope.

Also, if the batteries were not literally BRAND NEW, they would end up popping, hissing and eventually just turn off the headset. Rechargable batteries, forget about it. I could run them for about an hour after a fresh recharge and the headset would spit them out.

I've been using Turtle Beach's X3s for couple years and then traded up to the X31s when my X3s broke. The X31s are complete and total GARBAGE. Period. They use their new RF tech and it gets interference with every other wireless thing in your house that uses the 2.4Ghz wavelength (which is EVERYTHING including your wireless controllers). If the batteries weren't BRAND new, they would screw up and shut off.

I traded them in for the Tritton AX 720s. The first time I put them on my jaw dropped and I involuntarily said HOLY SHIT. I heard every damn footstep and I could tell exactly where it was coming from and I could tell how far away it was. MW2 ninjas...forget about 'em cuz they won't sneak up on you again.

The difference is like going from a Honda to a BMW and the price was only $30 more. So if you are in the market for headphones, give 'em a try. The only drawback so far is the damn wires, which I hate but I can live with them cuz they kick so much arse.

I returned them and got the Tritton AX 720s, which I believe have that Dolby Surround. All I could say was HOLY SH*T when I first put in Gears of War2. They cost $130 so they are cheaper than the X41s so, if you don't mind wires (which I loathe but feel it was worth it), give 'em a try.

That's it. End of story No, I do not work for Tritton :D

I've had my set for a few months, and for the most part, they're great.. The only problem I;ve had is periodic static i get from the contacts at the base of the mic swivel. Where the mic attaches to the headset, it can rotate around to adjust to your face or swing out of the way.. the problem is, i periodically get bursts of loud static when i move this piece or just spontaneously.. Tapping the mount or swiveling it around a bit makes it go away, but it's annoying as hell.. probably dirty contacts, but they had this problem right out of the box and it hasn't changed at all with use. Still a good set for gaming.. I may just take them apart and clean the contacts my self.

Hey Guys. I have a pair of these bad boys and I have no complaints. I do run a hard wired internet signal and do not have any other wireless devices at home, so I have experienced none of the interference.

I will say this - when you run in a full party (I do almost exclusively). The headphones lose some of their effectiveness due to your team constantly communicating via voicechat - you often cannot here the softer sounds through their voices. When you're playing solo - I literally have seen a full kill increase in my Kill to Death Ratio during solo runs in large playlists - I almost never get stabbed.

I have the Tritton AXpro's, with the X41's i like that they get power off the USB port for the mini-receiver rather than needing a power brick. Batteries in the headset i'm not fond of but there's not much else that could have been done. I like the wireless over the 12 foot cable the trittons have, but 2.4ghz is pretty crowded with wifi and cordless phones, plenty of opportunity there to pickup noise. Independent volume for chat is a great plus to have.

Amazon have them on sale for 179 right now, i'm debating ifi should pick them up or not.

I have been very interested in these as I'm gaming mostly in the bedroom now so I can't use my wired Trittons so I appreicate the review. But how is the mic? The biggest flaw of the Trittons was the flimsy, shitty-sounding mic that clipped on the side. Are the X41s any better?

Also, does the chat boost feature actually work?

I wrote this article before November. I waited for MW2 to come out before I finished it. I was able to confirm the mic popping issue with others. When using rechargeable batteries the voice chat pops. My guess is this is due rechargeable batteries are 1.3V while alkaline is 1.5v. The chat circuit might not have enough power with rechargeables. I am going to figure out how to modify the battery compartment to hold a single 3V battery. It will probably have to be a CD123 battery and some velcro.

Other than that I really like the headset. It is comfortable and the sound quality is great.

Nice review. My Brother just got a pair of these for Xmas and really likes 'em. Cordless is awesome(I have the X4's) but I noticed at the SouthWest LAN last Feb. that those of us who were cordless experienced quite a bit of interference. I hope the X41's don't have the same problem.

Thanks for the review! I was seriously thinking about getting these- may have to save up. I currently own the x3's which are nice, but aren't really in the same ballpark as the new ones, plus would really appreciate the wireless and surround sound.

If you purchase the x31's they are really awesome but I didn't get to use mine for a month. They came with a bad mic cable. There are a lot of post about it. I went to the turtle beach website and the moderator took my info and said they were building new cables. They shipped me one and now everthing is good. If you have any trouble with the mic part of yours (static, echoing, loud piercing sounds that make your friends mute you) shoot them a message and they were very good about working with me on resolving this issue.
